Our latest project has shown that front garden boundaries do not just have to be over grown chain link fences they can also be beautiful. When we first viewed Tim's project in Harrow we were a little overwhelmed by how messy the boundary was. An old decrepit chain link fence which was barely standing by itself was interwoven with a mass of Ivy and a robust Sycamore sapling.
The boundary further up was a collapsing fence connected to fence posts which were imbedded in the neighbours concrete plinths. Projects like these are always a challenge as there is a diplomatic bridge to gap. There is always more work involved than many people expect and many landscapers simply pass up pricing for them.
Either way at Harrow & Hillingdon Landscape Gardeners we pride ourselves at being able to balance these issues. We worked with next door to find a solution which fits everybody. We decided on replacing the fence by breaking out sections of the old plinth and re-concreting. When complete we would render the whole bottom plinth to create a consistent. plinth under the new fencing.

The existing entrance to the driveway was rather narrow and we were to provide a wider entrance by extending the block paving. We tidied up the end of the hedge by planting two photinia red robbins within a new planting bed build with Brett autumn sunset edging kerbs. We knew there was an old tree stump under the ground so had to excavate around it carefully and get the stump ground out completely. We then spread mot type 1 compactable base and laid the new blocks to the edge of the edging kerbs. We also installed two new timber pyramid toped posts at either end.
When we had completed the job it had completely transformed the entrance to the property quite substantially! The now grand entrance was not only easier to drive into but also quite a statement! The posts looked amazing and finished the entance off with a new, clean feel.
The end result was a rather striking recreation of an old and collapsing boundary. The rendering at the bottom provided a consistent surface to the raised plinth and the slatted fencing looked fantastic. These slatted fences are becoming more popular with a more modern clean look.
These in general are twice the price of traditional fences but look more that twice as effective. These double sided slatted fences also absorb some of the flow of strong winds. This can lead to less stress on the posts and framework over time.
